Our Volunteers

None of what we do would be possible without our volunteers. None of our staff are paid and we have no government funding. We rely on people who love parrots and want to take care of the ones who have been neglected or abandon. Here's just a few...

Gerda

Gerda started Wildlife Rescue, Inc. in 1994 as Wild Bird Rescue out of her house in Baltimore, but she's not the type that can say no to anyone or anything in need...so Wild Bird Rescue quickly became more then just birds. Because of her, Angel's Avian Rescue is now able to home over 60 unwanted parrots along with the countless others that have come through our doors and have been adopted to their forever homes. Aside from parrots, Gerda rehabilitates every thing from Hummingbirds to Eagles. Gerda is the soul of Angel's Avian Rescue.

Jen & Mike

Jen and Mike stumbled upon the rescue by chance. One day while buying food at a pet store, a conversation with a stranger led to the question “Have you ever been up to Gerda’s?” Well, the answer was no, but they came up that week and have been here every weekend since. That was several years ago, and now, Jen and Mike handle all the adoptions here at Angel’s Avian Rescue. They have six parrots at home, four of which are from the rescue and will be taking two more once they move into their house.

Phyllis

We met Phyllis at one of our Fall Fund Raisers...she came up and said "I heard you have parrots here, could I see them?" So we gave her the tour and she was very interested and asked if she could come and help out sometime. Little did we know she has had tons of formal parrot training...she was the parrot handler at The Rainforest Cafe and was taught by the parrot trainers from Disney! She has been to South America to see the Hyacinth in the wild and travels extensively to go to seminars and classes. Phyllis has an African Grey as well as a male and female Eclectus. The Macaws you see her holding are two of the most aggressive birds at the rescue, yet in a short time she has earned his trust and they are right at home together. Phyllis is an incredible addition to our volunteer staff!

Trace

Trace is the newest member of our volunteer staff. Recently transplanted from Michigan where he did rescue, Trace's job moved him out here, and we're glad they did. Trace isn't one to sit still, he's at the rescue early building perches and trimming nails. Trace fit in from day one. He walked in on the first day and it was like he'd always been there...everybirdy accepted him right away. We're glad he's here and hope he doesn't have to move again any time soon!

Helen

Helen has been the "bird person" the longest. Wildlife Rescue has many volunteers and even though they have no problem handling Eagles and Red Tail Hawks, most find the parrots intimidating, so Helen was the one to take that responsibility. Helen has been with Wildlife Rescue for many years, done many rescues and has become quite close with many of the birds. For a lot of our flock, Helen was their first friend.

Joy

Joy has been coming to the rescue for quite sometime. Although not as well know for her talent as a self portrait photographer, she seems to have the knack for getting the most neurotic parrots to be her friend. Gypsy (may she rest in piece) was an Umbrella Cockatoo and the most nervous bird we’ve ever had. She would quake and thrash around her cage whenever you would try to feed her or even just walk up…but she liked Joy. She’d come right out and hop in her lap! Couldn’t believe it! And more recently, Joy has been able to get Shirley, another Umbrella Cockatoo who has the same fears, to let her pet her. Joys gentle ways are an asset to our rescue.

Dawn

Dawn has only been coming to the rescue for less then a year, but she has made a huge difference. The birds have a blast when she’s there. She doesn’t even stop to say hi, she just jumps right in the bird room, lets everyone out and scrubs the place from head to toe with at least one bird on her shoulder at all times, gets the all dancing and playing. They all love her and so do we!
