This is sometimes the hardest part of our job...letting our babies go. After spending so much time with each bird, seeing them come around and learn to trust again, when it comes time to send them off to their new home, it is always bitter sweet. Here are some of our success stories:
Carol & Max
Max was one of the lucky ones...he never had to see the rescue. Max is a Severe Macaw who came from a basement in South West Baltimore...his cage was between two walls and a hot water heater...no windows, just a small lamp and a TV for companionship. He was quite aggressive when we got there, but that all changed once we got home. What a sweetie!
Since Max's toenails were so long, we decided to stop by Mama Bird Toys & Such for a quick pedicure before he would go to the vet to be checked out. It took a good 35 seconds for Max to win Carol's heart! So while Max was at the vet being checked out and quarantined, Carol was making arrangements for Max's new cage, new toys and new home! He even gets to go to work with Carol! Max is now getting all the attention he was deprived of for so many years.
Marge & Charlie
Why anyone would give up a bird like Charlie is beyond me. Charlie is a Patagonian Conure who came to the rescue just as sweet as can be, the only thing he wants out of life is what you see in the picture to your left. Just a happy little guy!
Marge is a member of the Baltimore Bird Fanciers and has rescued more then one bird over the years...Lily, an Umbrella Cockatoo in 1991 and more recently, Sid, a Congo African Grey...but as all parrot owners know, there is always room for one more. Enter Charlie.
At one of the bird club meetings, Marge had mentioned to Yvonne, another member, that she likes birds that enjoy cuddling. Fortunately, Yvonne was familiar with Angel's Avian Rescue and also quite familiar with Charlie. It was a match made in Heaven! Charlie spent about a year and a half at the rescue, but now enjoys all the cuddling he can handle! Lily and Sid aren't too sure about their new competition, but there is definitely enough love to go around!
Aleasha, Robert & Wiggles
Wiggles had only been at the rescue a few months when Aleasha and Robert came wanting to adopt a Macaw. Wiggles' Mom had died of heart problems several months before, he and Magic, a Mollucan Cockatoo, were her pride and joy.
With all the research Aleasha and Robert had done before coming to the rescue, we felt confident that this was going to be a good match. They put in their time volunteering and getting to know Wiggs and soon enough, Wiggles went to his new forever home.
Although Wiggles was rather nervous and quiet at the rescue, it turns out that once he got home and comfortable, he has quite a vocabulary! He keeps everyone in stitches with his kisses, his laughs and his imitation of a chicken. Not even we knew how good of a match this was going to be!
Autum & Wrigley
Wrigley is a little Quaker Parrot that has been at the rescue longer then I have. That's why I was so excited when Autum started coming to help out with Aleasha and Robert and made friends with Wrigley.
Wrigley wasn't always a friendly little guy. He used to have a partner and the two of them didn't really want anything to do with those of us who couldn't fly. But about a year ago, Wrigley's mate passed. Soon after I found Wrigley much more receptive to human companionship. And then came Autum.
Autum never worked without Wrigley on her shoulder...or in her pocket...on in the hood of her sweat shirt...you get the idea. And the whole time she was volunteering, she was also babysitting and saving her money for a big new cage and toys for her new little buddy. Needless to say, Wrigley is sufficiently spoiled now and there is no doubt that Autum is making up for all the time he had to spend at the rescue.
